Art History X Snyder Park
“Nothing is art if it does not come from nature.”
Art History in the Park hosts a monthly, play-based art history and art making experience at Snyder Park. Designed for homeschooling families, this workshop is held one weekday per month in an outdoor classroom environment.
In community, we explore periods in art history, focusing on at least one artist per session. We deep dive into an artist's work and life to get a sense of the social, political and historical environment in which the art was created. The remainder of the time is devoted to hands-on art making inspired by the period utilizing found, up-cycled and other materials donated by participants and the community.
Topics to be explored include kinetic art, participatory art, drawing and sketching in art history, artist journals, human depiction in art through the ages, etc. Each workshop is guided by our founder and educator, Catalina Lemaitre.
To ensure that income is not a barrier to access, Art History X Snyder Park is available by donation. The class is sustained by your support. It also depends on the support of the city of Fort Lauderdale and other partners.

Workshop Description:
Carlos Cruz Diez was a Venezuelan artist known for his pioneering work in kinetic and optical art — with a focus on public works that explore how we see color. He wanted art to be for everyone. His pieces play with color and their ability to change with movement, light and space.
Our next workshop will be the first of our Spring Series which will focus on exploring the elements of art in art history. We begin with Carlos Cruz Diez — one of the great masters of color. As he did, we will play with color mixing and color perception using materials available to us such as sand, yarn, paper and other found items.

At our final workshop of the season we’re exploring the vibrant world of Colombian artist Fernando Botero. Known for his exaggerated, round figures and bold colors, Botero’s work invites us to look at everyday life with a new lens—full of playfulness, personality, and cultural pride. At each station, we will explore different aspects of his work through sculpture, drawing, and movement.
