Roy Lichtenstein:

Art for Everyone: Pop! Bang! Wow!

“All my art is in some way about other art, even if the other art is cartoons”.
— Roy Lichtenstein
My use of evenly repeated dots and diagonal lines and uninflected color areas suggest that my work is right where it is, right on the canvas, definitely not a window into the world.
— Roy Lichtenstein

Workshop # 20:

Monday, November 17th from 10:00 am to 2:00pm

Snyder Park, Fort Lauderdale - Pavillion 6

By Donation (Suggested $18+ per family)

Monetary and in-kind donations make this program possible.

Workshop Description:

In our last workshop of the season, we will explore how Roy Lichtenstein transformed everyday objects and graphic comic-book styles into bold works of art. We’ll experiment with his signature techniques—bright primary colors, strong outlines, and “Benday” dot patterns—and use those to create our own fun, expressive pieces: from printed paper textures to painted socks, and collaborative collage. Through playful making and thinking together, we will explore how art can invite us to see the ordinary in a new and joyful way.

Workshop Flow:

9:30am to 10:00am — Set-up

10:00am to 11:30am — Art Stations (self-led)

11:30am to 12:15pm — Circle Time (Artist Talk w/ Picnic Lunch)

12:15pm to 1:00pm — Class Final Art Challenge (shared collectively or individually), Announcements & Goodbyes

1:00pm to 2:00pm — Clean-up

Prepare for the Workshop

Remember: This is a co-op. We all make it happen together!

  • 📍 Location:

    Snyder Park
3299 SW 4th Ave, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33315

    🕙 Time: 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

  • What to Bring:
    - Water and snacks or lunch
    - A blanket to sit on (and chairs if you prefer)
    - Clothes that can get messy

Recycling/Home items to ♻ collect ahead and bring to workshop. You don’t need everything- bring what you have and we will pool all these resources together. Bring:

    • Bubble wrap - we will need a lot of this for printmaking dot fun! Any reflective material such as grocery paper bags that are lined with foil. Think anything that could become a “mirror” in our artwork.

    • Comic books for our comic book station. You can take them back home- no worries!

    • Orphan socks from your stash

    • Text/Email pics of any interesting recycling items you have been collecting. Once you have a nice quantity specially I can plan a station around it. For example, participants collected bottle tabs all last year, donated 18 blue glass bottles we ended up turning into wind chimes, saved bags of old grains/beans for collaging etc.

    • Basic Artist Kit: Pencils, Erasers, Sharpener, Pens/Markers, Paper on clipboard or drawing book, Scissors, Glue/Glue stick. For new families joining the program and just building their art kit, this post has great ideas and supplies suggestions: How to Create a Basic Art Kit for Your Child

At-Home Activity

If in doubt, bring it. Diverse, interesting materials enrich the creative process.

  1. Watch!

  2. Create/Do!

    • 🎨 At-Home Activity: Comic Scene to Big Art

Before our next workshop, dive into the colorful world of comics!

      1. Read through some comic books or graphic novels—superheroes, adventure stories, or even funny strips.

      2. Pick one scene that catches your eye and recreate it in your own style on a large sheet, canvas, or poster board.

        • Keep the speech bubbles, bold “POW!” and “WOW!”, or dramatic faces if you like.

        • Or change the story—make it your own version of Pop Art!

      3. Bring your comics and your artwork to share at the workshop.

        • Don’t worry if you didn’t have time to make your piece at home—we’ll have this as a hands-on station at the park, too!

        • Feel free to bring as many comics as you have so others can get inspired, too.

This is a no-pressure, all-ages activity—just a chance to have fun turning everyday comics into colorful art!

🌿 Important Reminder: This is a cooperative family program. Please plan to stay with your child(ren), participate and lend a hand during the workshop. Together we make Art History in the Park possible!
