Workshop Description:

We will begin with a history of self portraits, then dive into the symbolic, colorful, surrealist and often pain-filled works created by 20th century Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. We will discuss her identity, life and work in the context of culture, industrialization, communism, women’s rights and the great depression and create our own symbolic portraits reflecting our unique identity.

Workshop Flow:

9:30am to 10:30am — Set-up

10:30am to 11:30am — Art Stations

11:30am to 12:15pm — Circle Time (Artist Talk w/ Lunch)

12:15pm to 1:15pm — Class Final Art Challenge (shared collectively or individually), Announcements & Goodbyes

1:15pm to 1:30pm — Clean-up

What to bring?

Remember: This is a co-op. We all make it happen together!

  1. Basic Art Kit:

    • For each artist (both kids and adults), please bring pencils, erasers, colored pencils/markers, paper on a clipboard/sketchbook, scissors and glue. We do have extras if you forget; no need to drive back home.

  2. Home Items:

    • Any beads, photos, stickers, stamps, small items that are meaningful to you and that you would like to use in your self- portrait

    • Hairband for flower crown station

    • Felt for flowers/animals (also on our Amazon Wishlist below)

  3. Recycling Bin Items:

    • Magazines for collaging

    • Pillow, chairs or blanket to sit on

    • Water

    • Snacks or packed lunch

    • I encourage you to embody this wonderful artist by joining us dressed in your best Frida or her husband — artist Diego Rivera. Think color, flowers, braids, woven fabrics, leather and bold prints …
